{"id":218,"date":"2016-03-22T12:31:42","date_gmt":"2016-03-22T12:31:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bwareham.opalstacked.com\/?p=218"},"modified":"2021-07-21T19:14:17","modified_gmt":"2021-07-21T19:14:17","slug":"218","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/info.wareh.am\/?p=218","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota: Weak on Bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amid several well-publicized suicides that may have been linked to bullying, and a growing national debate on the topic, we wanted to know what Minnesota schools had in place to combat bullying. Turns out the answer in many cases was not much &#8211; the result of arguably one of the weakest state laws in the country. At 37 words, it declared that school districts must have an anti-bullying policy, but provided no guidance on what it should contain and no mechanisms for enforcing the meager mandate. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2014\/04\/09\/dayton-signs-bullying-bill-into-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">That would change<\/a>\u00a0after our reports aired.<!--more--> In addition to several radio components, the project included several multimedia components. We requested the anti-bullying policies from all 492 districts and charter schools (all but 19 responded) and <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/projects\/2011\/05\/bullying\/documents.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted them<\/a> for the audience to compare. I compiled information about bullying from a statewide student survey and presented district level\u00a0information in a <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/projects\/2011\/05\/bullying\/map.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series of interactive maps<\/a>.
