A partial list of awards for stories and projects to which I’ve made significant contributions:

NABJ Salute to Excellence (2017)

Documentary – 1st Place, Radio (markets 16+) – Lead editor for Minnesota’s Graduation Gap, a year-long project that combined compelling personal narratives with data to show how Minnesota, with its nation-low spending on student support services, fails students at risk of not graduating from high school on time.


Eric Severeid Award (2017)

Documentary/Special – 1st Place, Large Market Radio – Lead editor of The Protests at Standing Rock: Oil, Water, Race and Treaty Rights, an hour-long special to provide much-needed context to what was still an ongoing protest in the middle of the Dakotas over the Dakota Access pipeline.

Investigative -1st Place, Large Market Radio – Editor for Black drivers bear brunt of routine arrests by St. Anthony PD, an in-depth, data-driven look at arrests in the community in which Philando Castile was killed by a police officer during a traffic stop.

RTNDA National Murrow Award (2016)

Overall excellence for MPR News. The team entry included several of my contributions: a segment from the Jamar Clark special report; our Climate Change in Minnesota report; a story on the iconic status of walleye in Minnesota; an analysis of arrest disparities that relied on my data cleaning and crunching skills.


DuPont Award (2015)

I was one of several editors on the Betrayed by Silence team that revealed how the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis covered up clergy abuse. This body of work was also honored as an IRE finalist in 2014 and 2013, and won numerous regional awards. One of my major contributions to this coverage won a RTNDA Regional Murrow Award in 2015 for investigative reporting.


AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award (2015)

Radio – Silver Award I was one of two editors on our Climate Change in Minnesota project.


RTNDA Regional Murrow Award (2012)

Audio Investigative Reporting – Lead editor for our series Minnesota: Weak on Bullying. The series also won Minnesota AP Best in Show honors.


Casey Award for Meritorious Journalism (2011)

Audio – I edited the half-dozen stories reported by high school age reporters.


National Headliner Award (2008)

Breaking news or continuing coverage of a single news event – As news director, I had primary responsibility for our coverage of the I-35W bridge collapse, which killed 13 people. That coverage was also honored with a RTNDA Regional Murrow Award.

Overall excellence for KNOW-FM (MPR News’s flagship station), during my tenure as news director.
